Athletics
We Build Athletes
At Prince George's County Youth Combat Academy (PGCYCA), we believe athletics can be a powerful foundation for personal growth. Through wrestling and combat sports, young people develop strength, confidence, discipline, resilience, and the determination to keep moving forward—even when things get difficult.
Our Athletics programs are designed to meet young athletes where they are, from first-time participants learning the fundamentals to experienced competitors working toward higher levels of performance.
We don't just train athletes to compete. We help them develop the skills, habits, and character to succeed on the mat and beyond.

What We Offer
Youth Wrestling
Wrestling serves as the foundation of our athletic programming. Athletes learn proper technique, movement, positioning, strategy, and competition skills in a structured and supportive environment.
Our instruction focuses on:
Wrestling fundamentals and technique
Neutral, top, and bottom positions
Takedowns, escapes, reversals, and control
Drilling and situational wrestling
Live wrestling and match preparation
Sportsmanship and competition etiquette
Programs are offered for athletes ranging from beginners to advanced athletes, based on age, experience, and seasonal availability.
Athlete Development
We focus on developing the complete athlete—not simply teaching wrestling techniques.
Training helps young people improve:
Strength and conditioning
Coordination and balance
Agility and body control
Endurance
Flexibility and mobility
Confidence and mental toughness
Discipline and consistency
Athletes are encouraged to focus on individual growth and continuous improvement while learning how effort, preparation, and perseverance contribute to long-term success.
Camps & Clinics
PGCYCA may offer camps, clinics, and specialized training opportunities throughout the year to help athletes strengthen specific skills and gain additional experience.
Opportunities may include:
Beginner wrestling clinics
Technique-focused sessions
Position-specific training
Competition preparation
Guest clinician sessions
School-break and summer camps
Supplemental combat sports instruction
Camps and clinics may be offered separately from regular seasonal programming.
Competition Opportunities
For athletes ready to compete, PGCYCA provides opportunities to apply what they have learned in appropriate competitive settings.
Depending on the program and season, athletes may have opportunities to participate in:
Local tournaments
Regional competitions
USA Wrestling events
Developmental competitions
Advanced competition opportunities
Competition is encouraged when appropriate for an athlete's development but is not the sole measure of success.
We value growth, effort, sportsmanship, resilience, and the confidence athletes gain through challenging themselves.
Strength & Conditioning
Age-appropriate strength and conditioning are incorporated into athletic programming to help participants build a strong physical foundation.
Training may focus on:
Functional strength
Speed and agility
Endurance
Balance and coordination
Mobility
Injury prevention fundamentals
Proper movement and body awareness
Our goal is to help athletes become stronger, safer, and more confident in their physical abilities.
Combat Sports Development
As PGCYCA grows, we envision expanding opportunities for young people to experience additional combat sports and grappling disciplines that complement our wrestling foundation.
Future or specialized programming may include exposure to:
Freestyle wrestling
Greco-Roman wrestling
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Mixed Martial Arts
Other age-appropriate combat sport disciplines
Program availability will vary based on qualified coaching, facilities, scheduling, and participant interest.
More Than a Sport
Athletics at PGCYCA is about more than learning how to win a match.
Through training and competition, we teach young people to:
Show up prepared
Work through challenges
Accept coaching and feedback
Respect teammates, coaches, and opponents
Handle both success and disappointment
Set goals and work consistently toward them
Develop confidence through effort and achievement
These are lessons that extend far beyond athletics.
Our Goal
Our goal is to provide a safe, structured, and challenging environment where young people can discover their athletic potential while developing confidence, discipline, resilience, and character.
Whether an athlete wants to learn a new sport, improve their skills, compete at a higher level, or simply become stronger and more confident, PGCYCA is committed to helping them grow.
Find Your Strength. Build Your Potential.
Every athlete starts somewhere. Whether your child is stepping onto the mat for the first time or ready for their next challenge, we're here to help them learn, grow, and discover what they're capable of.
